“I know your type, tall, dark, and dead” Sorry but just wait, you’ll be doing it too. So… I decided to go poking around PopCap’s website for some unknown reason and came across Plants Vs. Zombies. Sick looked over my shoulder and said, “Plants vs Zombies?! That sounds stupid.” I found out it was a “Tower Defense” game. I was curious and told her we should try it.
We got stuck to the Mac, playing the trial… soon we were hooked! Over the next two days we found ourselves playing the trial over and over. Then the next day it went on sale and that was all it took. We could no longer resist making the purchase.
You and your green thumb are on the verge of a looming Zombie Apocalypse and those zombies want to eat your brain. Seriously, they will stop at nothing to get it. You’ll be amazed at the lengths they go to. To start off, you are given a Sunflower and a Pea Shooter to defend your house. The Sunflowers give you “Sun” which you need to plant more plants, and the Pea Shooters… well, they shoot peas. The zombies assault your yard in waves and, as they get smarter, they start wearing/carrying different items for offense and defense. To counter this, you unlock different plants to thwart them. Maybe you’ll get a piranha plant that eats zombies, or a squash plant to “squash” them. The excitement is not knowing what’s gonna happen next! You always get hooked by wondering “What plant will they give me?” or “Which wacky zombie is next?” I’d actually say to myself, “I’ll quit right after this round.” Then they give you a new awesome plant and it’s, “Ok, right after I find out what this bad boy does.” Stuck!
Yes, it was THAT good. There’s also much more to it than the main game: puzzles, survival, and other surprises, it has tons of replay value. We tore it up! We would definitely say that PvZ is Popcap’s #1 title to date. And the fact that it was put together by a small team makes it even more impressive. The artwork and animation done by Rich Werner is A-mazing! (We even downloaded the End Credit music!)
We spent a lot of time poking and prodding and couldn’t find any problems with it. The only thing we didn’t like is that we played it non-stop until we didn’t have anything else to do! I’m not saying that the game is short, we just couldn’t stop!
Plants Vs. Zombies is reasonably priced at $19.95 and available for download on PopCap’s site. It is definitely worth picking up, especially if you’re lucky enough to find it on sale! You actually get more than expected out of this one.
So I’m gonna have to say that I DO want zombies on my lawn… just to pelt ’em with peas, corn and frozen watermelons! Go ahead and grab it, you won’t regret it.
Morning, or evening for those that are either on the other side of the world or those who are nocturnal like myself. Another week, another random title, and one anniversary down for John and Desirai. For anyone living near the Joplin and Springfield area in Southwest Missouri, keep your ears open for any word on if my plans to host a video game tournament end up happening. I’m currently getting this organized and making the phone calls, but no word on a date yet. I’ll be sure to post the information to the site in a news post once I have things finalized.
Let’s see if I can discuss this little tidbit without turning into a complete Linux fanboy in the process. Microsoft’s Head of Security for their UK division has stated that switching your browser from Internet Explorer to…any other browser will open you up to much more severe security risks. Now, without going back and listing off some security holes that have been in IE6, but I will give a link. This statement from the Head of Security comes after the admittance by MS that an IE flaw was used to attack Google and gain access to users accounts. They even admitted that it was unlikely Firefox or any other browser was affected by this exploit. The whole situation is a huge PR disaster for Microsoft, and I look forward to seeing if they will release an awkward video ad to promote IE now.
AT&T has fixed a bug with their handling of Facebook Mobile that caused users to log into the wrong account. Yes, I mean actually logging into some random person’s Facebook on your phone and being able to pose as them. Fortunately it seemed to have been only in a few isolated incidents, and unfortunately no hilarious stories could be found involving this security blunder. AT&T has put a new layer of security into the login process and have been working with Facebook to be certain the issue wont pop up randomly in the future. Rest easy Facebook users, but don’t click on that weird looking link like you want to.
Keeping with today’s trend of exploits and bugs in software. If you run a D-Link router or you know someone that does, you might want to pay attention. There was a fairly significant hole in the security of current D-Link firmware that was recently brought to light. The bug was in how D-Link implemented Cisco’s Home Network Administration Protocol for router configuration. If you own a D-Link router that matches one of these three model numbers: DIR-855 (hardware version A2), DIR-655 (versions A1 to A4), and DIR-635 (version B). Go upgrade immediately.
Time has come again for me to wrap this up, and yes today the title does tie into a video. Today’s video was discovered during my browsing of headlines on 1up. I know some of you will really enjoy this, particularly those that hunt after something with a passion on certain video games. Enjoy everyone, I’ll see you next week…or sooner if I can get the logistics of my tournament settled.
First off we’d like to thank everyone who entered. All entrants showcased and highlighted our love in unique ways which made choosing winners difficult for us. One of the submissions was sadly disqualified for using Photoshop. Even still, we enjoyed the screenshot so much we felt it at least deserved a mention. And now, without further ado, we present you our Screenshot Sunday: Anniversary Contest Winners.

Here we are again. We’ve managed to survive another week. I am curious as to how bad these recent two cold snaps hit some of you. Any sheets of ice coating the roads? We all know those are loads of fun. So, taking a break from wrapping myself up in layers of blankets and glaring at the thermometer…I took a bit of time to dig through some news headlines, and John’s recent post with the Star Wars pun. No, John, I don’t intend to let you live that down for awhile. I’ll have the rest of the day to poke fun at John, so let’s get to T.T. shall we?
Microsoft has pulled nearly every version of its Microsoft Office program from its own website. Why? Back in 2009, there was a copyright infringement case that Microsoft lost and this is how they are taking action to comply with the court’s rulings. To anyone following this ordeal, it seems a bit comical as they try to seemingly not make a big deal out of why they removed all but one version of Office. For those really needing a new version of a word processor, I recommend OpenOffice which has been a good replacement of MS Office on my laptop for quite some time.
The group over at Google has made a bit of a slip up this time around. Random e-mails were sent out to Google customer’s detailing the web traffic of businesses. All fine and what-not, but these businesses were not owned by them and most have not even heard of the merchants they were reading about in the e-mail. Every single reported case of this incident says they received the November 2009 traffic for a random business they had no connection to. Bit of an odd slip up, but one none the less as for some this can be very private information that you wouldn’t want some random Joe off the street to know. Google’s course of action? Blame human error and stop sending out traffic e-mails until they can figure out where the slip up started. Have fun with that Google, do tell us if anyone gets fired over this.
Tell me how you’d love to spend an afternoon. Sun tanning on a beach? Nah. Playing golf with…yea, not going to make that joke. Let’s move along before I pick a name out of a hat of famous golf pros to make fun of (read: Tiger Woods). How I wouldn’t mind spending an afternoon? Testing a bunch of cool smartphones. Seriously. I would love to sit and just toy with the things until I was forced to write my summary of how well they performed in comparison to each other. Well, it seems someone had just that job. Though they just compared how well each touch screen worked using the simple built in drawing program on each of the phones. iPhone came out as the overall winner, but the Nexus One by Google was by far the winner when it came to recognizing touches at the very edges of the screen. If you have a touchscreen smartphone, it is very simple to reproduce this test so you can compare yours to the image provided by the MOTO Development Group who conducted the test.
And any sort of creativity just died. I blame the cold and how freezing my room currently is at the moment. So I’m off to bask in the glow of my HDTV playing some Dragon Age: Origins and….yea, I think I’ll watch this video too. Want to see? Alright then, here you are. 😛
