Tech Tuesday #16: Phase Two

Afternoon everyone, Ryo here with a bit of a late post due to a few reasons. Nothing important enough to go into here though. Completely unrelated as to why Tech Tuesday was delayed today…the Borderlands DLC dubbed Zombie Island was launched in the wee hours of the morning. Did I mention Left 4 Dead 2 is an awesome time waster? Right then, moving away from speculations.

Flipping through my news reader today, I noticed a bit of a trend going. Google is making headlines everywhere for various things, but really is anyone surprised about that anymore? I gotta admit, hearing about Google and TiVo partnering up to do some research of people’s viewing habits did make me do a bit of a double take though. Seems Google believes that it is worth taking a look into just how much of a commercial people end up seeing as they push that wonderful little fast forward button. Just because I feel in a bit of a spiteful mood today, I’m going to play an episode of House M.D. while I type the rest of this that has had the commercials stripped out of it. Take that Google. 😛

Most of you will get a chuckle out of the fact that the man dubbed as the “Godfather of Spam” has been sentenced to four years in prison. Research into Alan Ralsky’s operation turned up a bit of a surprise. The man ran the whole operation like a legitimate business. Most of his victims were conned into trading stocks in companies that really weren’t on the radar. This little scheme spanned world wide and raked in millions for Ralsky’s little team. Good riddance as far as I’m concerned.

Apple has released an interesting translation app. It uses a picture of your lips to make them speak in three other languages. Unfortunately, I can’t give any personal reviews on the app due to Sprint not carrying the iPhone (yet) but this thing looks like a very interesting way to absolutely make fun of yourself for being a tourist. Hey, we all have to laugh at ourselves now and then right?

Time for me to sign off for the week, but I think before that I will leave you with an interesting video that was discovered by a friend of mine. It still impresses me how much work went into this video, so enjoy the 8-Bit Trip.

Tech Tuesday #15: This Wasn’t In My Contract

Morning everyone, it’s been an interesting week and I’ve torn myself away from my copies of Left 4 Dead 2 and Assassin’s Creed 2 in order to dig through some news. Have a video to show today as well, gotta say it can be just a tad creepy but you’ll understand soon enough. Let’s get straight to this shall we?

Amidst the news of ThePirateBay shutting down their tracker in favor of another service and studies on how cell phone usage increases your chance to get hit by a car (don’t ask, not worth it), I found a small little piece about Microsoft’s co-founder Paul Allen. It seems Paul was recently diagnosed with cancer. From the news report, it is stated he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma which is a type that is known to be very fast acting but it also responds well to the usual chemotherapy treatment. Best of luck in your recovery, Paul Allen.

For you Android owners out there, one of the issues plaguing this device has been fixed in a silent update released by Motorola. No, it isn’t the reported speaker problems but rather the auto-focus problems the built in camera was having. The guys over at Engadget tested it out with their devices and can confirm the issue has officially been resolved so rejoice Android owners, no more blurry pictures. Well, at least no more need to manually get a good focus.

An interesting claim was made by the company behind the OnLive cloud gaming service. It seems they are convinced they can get their service working on a device as small as the iPhone. Granted that trying to play a PC style game on a touch screen mobile device isn’t going to translate pretty well, it was said initial plans for the iPhone variant were so OnLive users can track their friends and eventually they would bring some games tailored to mobile devices. Pretty cool for iPhone users, I’m still waiting for my chance to test out the service on my laptop.

Now, just because I can’t resist mentioning this after reading the headline. In fact, I will say only a few words with the next sentence and I want you to let your imaginations run a bit before continuing. Bomb-proof wallpaper. Now think on that for a bit, I’ll go grab a coffee.

Right, now to explain. X-Flex wallpaper is made of kevlar and elastic polymer. In a demo video of it, the stuff resisted a wrecking ball trying to break through a concrete wall. Pretty impressive really, and naturally the military is looking into using this new wallpaper to reinforce their bases. Now I’m going to quickly pull away from this topic before I make a joke about interior decorating.

So comes the time for you to shift uncomfortably in your seats while watching what is obviously corporate mandated dance moves. Why is it every time Microsoft tries to do something to connect with people it comes off a tad bit creepy?

With that, I sign off and head back to Renaissance Italy to cap some people and probably senselessly beat up guards for amusement in Assassin’s Creed 2. Enjoy your week, my readers, and I’ll see you next Tuesday.

Dear Sister

Hello once again everyone. I’ve got a quick little tidbit for you. Not too long ago, SickNdehed decided that she wanted to get involved in Voice Acting. She has a great voice for something like that, in my opinion. Well, she started poking around and found that people were looking for Voice Actors on machinima.com. This is where she came across Hudson Creations, a team led by chairman Lewis Hudson. The following video is a test run, but we will be doing more work with Hudson Creations in the future.

Tech Tuesday #14: Is That Supposed To Be Blinking?

Hello loyal readers and passerby alike. Ryo here after a crazy night of hanging out at my local Game Stop to enjoy the midnight launch of Modern Warfare 2. Unfortunately I didn’t have the cash to shell out, or the console to play it on due to my recent RROD on my 360. Three years of faithfully serving up hours of enjoyment, I think it deserves a rest. Ignoring the little itch in the back of my mind that wants to post detailed steps on how to disassemble a 360 in order to fix this error yourself…shall we jump into right into some techie news?

Nokia has finally started shipping out the new model of Maemo based smartphones to those who pre-ordered the device. Dubbed the N900 this is supposed to be Nokia’s top of the line hitter for the time being. I own their previous Maemo device called the N810 and if this really is an improvement over that, I can’t wait to see about getting my hands on that tempting piece of tech. The obvious improvements for this new model are going to be better CPU and larger internal storage. The N810 had an internal 2 GB card installed with a slot so you could add an extra micro SD in, but the CPU is what really was the limitation of the device. Better CPU means better programs/games and load times for apps.

When I first came across the GlideTV Navigator, my first thought was: “I wonder how well you could spin that on a table.” Ignoring the mocking comments I made to myself, I studied the review of it a bit closer and the thing really does look useful. If you are willing to plop down the cash for a piece of hardware that is essentially a remote control for your laptop or desktop. Honestly the thing looks uncomfortable to hold, but apparently the reviewer said that GlideTV really has put quite a bit of effort into the design to make it simple yet elegant enough to be set out in the living room without it sticking out like a sore thumb. This new device really makes the fairly simple setup for remotely controlling my laptop seem a bit amateurish…maybe I just am missing a funky styled device to connect to the laptop? Brilliant idea.

In an unsurprising move, Google has opted to toss out free WiFi to people using the US’ airports. Well some of them at least, 47 announced so far, but this is certainly a welcomed gesture from Google. It shows a bit of a human face on the giant company doesn’t it? Maybe even dispute the claims that Google is evil? Seriously though, Lee Williams from Symbian still thinks Google is evil because they state in their philosophy page that they will do no evil in order to make profits.

Couldn’t bring myself to type out a joke about that so I’ll leave it to your imaginations. A little side note, off topic of course: Today marks the 26th birthday of the first known bit of code that could give an un-priviledged user access to a server. Fred Cohen’s proof-of-concept code took five minutes after running to take over a Unix server. Not bad at all for the time, and since then malicious code has become nearly commonplace on the internet. I doubt I need to tell anyone not to open any suspicious attachments…do I?

Well, I’m off to steal one of my family member’s consoles so I can actually enjoy Dragon Age: Origins for awhile. Hopefully I can scrounge up some cash and get a new system since I have no desire to get this one repaired and it doesn’t help the fact it was previously opened due to one small mishap in the past. If anything it will make a great test system for testing out case mods and the like. Take care everyone, I’ll see you next week.
