Tech Tuesday #7: Did You Drop The Chip?

Another week gone by, and another set of days ticked off my countdown to two or three solid days of no sleep and intense gaming. For those that attended PAX and caught the flu, best of luck recovering quickly. Now let’s get started as I have something to show you that I find a bit touching.

Microsoft’s Zune HD has already been torn apart by the usual sites known for doing so. What was interesting about this new Zune is not the hardware, though that is pretty cool too, is that the fact the development team took it upon themselves to put a special little dedication to a lost member of their team. On the inside of the case, the Zune HD inscription reads: “For Our Princess.” If that doesn’t show how much of a valued member of the team this person was, I’m not sure what else could. Unfortunately I don’t have the name of the person who this dedication was meant to go out to, but if anyone knows leave the name in a comment and I will gladly edit this post to mention the name.

Keeping on the topic of Microsoft, they really are pushing hard to get IT departments everywhere to upgrade to Windows 7. MS realizes that many people decided to figuratively give the finger to Vista and now they want those same nay-sayers to upgrade from their eight year old Windows XP straight to Windows 7. In a move to support this, Microsoft has been releasing case studies and various other documents that all support Windows 7’s stability and performance in some way. This is expected really, if you make an operating system (OS) and a lot of people use the older version, you are going to try to get people to upgrade right? On the IT department’s side of things, they want something that will work and be stable so a lot of their hangups about upgrading to Windows 7 likely is the fact it is brand new and very little real world testing has been done of it. Makes sense on both fronts really. We’ll see how many IT departments decide to stick with the older version of Windows and how many decide to upgrade.

Today I found a job that has to be fairly interesting. NASA has a team called Desert RATS, and no they are not actually rats. NASA loves acronyms. These guy’s job is to test out all the vehicles used for travel on planetary surfaces. In this case, the moon since we have yet to perfect deep space travel. Pretty much, these guys ride around in the vehicles in the Arizona desert and test out all their capabilities while recording the results. Go check out the link and flip through the gallery to see them hard at work.

Alright, what has to be one of the most fought over things in computing. What I am talking about is which CPU to use in your computer and which is better: Intel or AMD. While I have no intentions to bring up any sort of fight here at AMMIH, I do intend to show an Intel commercial because I find it funny and could be the spawning point of a few jokes if you are of the humorous persuasion. Enjoy, everyone, I’m off to my local Game Stop.

Bungie’s PAX “Prepare to Drop” Panel

I was getting ready to write a really long detailed article about Bungie’s “Prepare to Drop” panel at PAX, but quickly realized it would be impossible to relay the hilarity that ensued. It’s much better if you just watch it for yourself. I believe there are 8 vids total. Without further ado…
