Tech Tuesday #4: That’s Pretty Good Packing

Another week has gone by and I am back to open the front door to greet the flurry of news swirling around the figurative doorstep located somewhere where it is cold. Yea, train of thought sort of derailed at the end of that sentence. Let’s completely ignore my failed attempt at typing up a colorful phrase and head right into some tech news.

First up, I found this little piece about an autonomous robot designed to crawl along the underside of ships to clean off what is called hard foulers. That usually consists of barnacles, oysters, and pretty much any sort of underwater life that will latch onto the bottom of a vessel. This little guy has been dubbed the BUG (Bio-inspired Underwater Grooming) Tool. Initial tests of the BUG Tool have apparently proven to be “very exciting.” How exciting? Well…I honestly have no clue, but let’s just imagine a bunch of stereotypical geeks in big glasses jumping up and down cause their robot works. Funny mental image isn’t it? 😛

Microsoft is hopping into the non-smartphone part of the cellphone market with a fairly intriguing piece of software called OneApp. Very appropriately named since this app lets the standard cellphone that supports it to use Windows Live Messenger, Facebook, and several other services all from this tiny little program. From the tech demo, the thing looks pretty fast and if I didn’t have a Blackberry I would give this app a few test runs in a heartbeat. Once it is released outside of South Africa that is. Ahh…test markets. Gotta love them. Anyway, here’s the tech demo if you wanna see a visual of what OneApp does.

Nokia’s N900 finally has some pictures leaked out to the public. If you remember from last time, I mentioned I have the N810 version of their internet tablet and really do enjoy using the thing. It has come in quite handy for doing remote administration on my network and for popping it out of my pocket to load up the modified Firefox for a quick something to read while lounging on the couch. The N900 will run the new Maemo 5 operating system which is based around Debian, which in turn has spawned arguable one of the most popular Linux distros out there: Ubuntu.

Now it is time for me to show just how geeky I can be, not many know what today is. On today eighteen years ago, a college student living in Helsinki posts a comment to a Usenet board asking for a bit of feedback on this project he is working on that is based around Unix. This college student is none other than Linus Torvalds who at that time had built a simple kernel that was Unix-like. From this simple request, thousands of volunteers helped him refine the kernel he had built and the first version of his kernel was posted to the FTP server at the Helsinki University of Technology. This version was named Freax, but the sysop of the FTP server renamed the kernel Linux in honor of its creator. The first full version of Linux to be released, the 1.0 version, was released three years later in March of ’94.

Now that the history lesson for today is over with, and I’ve tipped my hat to the creator of the kernel that my OS runs off of…it’s time again to show you just why I picked that title, and yes there is a strange video to go along with it. Didn’t think I was going to let you off easy now did you?

Opera has been widely adopted as the go to choice for mobile browsers on cellphones and the sole browser used by the Nintendo Wii. Opera is getting ready to release version 10 of their browser that is supposed to be significantly faster. I am curious if this will help them out any in attracting new users to their browser since the internet browser market is dominated by Internet Explorer and Firefox. Enjoy the video while I go get some video game time in, then some much needed sleep.

Tech Tuesday #3: Wishing For A New Pillow

Ryo back again with another seemingly random title, as is the normal routine you will understand it later. Before we start today, I wanted to do a bit of a follow-up to the first Tech Tuesday. Remember the creepy commercial I signed off on with that post? Well Palm has continued to crank out those things with the same actress and the newest one is up for everyone to…enjoy? She’s still creepy if you ask me, but hey…that is a cool feature she shows off.

Alright, now that I have shared with you another installment of unusual phone commercials…let’s jump to some interesting gadgets shall we? Ran across something fairly cool if you use a webcam to take video for whatever reason. Coming to stores September 9th is Microsoft’s latest addition to the LifeCam series. Dubbed LifeCam Cinema HD this monster of a webcam will be capable of capturing video in full 720p. To answer the inevitable question, yes it requires a hefty processor to record that high quality of a video stream.

When I first read the title of this next little tidbit, I had to stop a moment and deep down my inner Trekkie stirred a little. If I tried to say I didn’t want this gadget, I’d crack up laughing that probably would quickly fade to a longing sob at not having the money for this. Pathetic? Possibly, but it still can’t take away from the sheer awesome-ness that is the Tricorder PMP-09. The thing even has twelve LCARS themes on it. Twelve! That puts my four little LCARS themes I have on my Nokia N810 to shame. Seriously, I love some of the stuff fellow Star Trek fans come up with.

Moore’s Law states the transistors that can be placed on an integrated circuit doubles roughly every two years, give or take a bit of time. Why do I bring this up? Well I caught wind of a story about IBM looking to sustain Moore’s Law in terms of processing power by doing some research into using DNA to reduce the size of processor chips. In order to keep up with Moore’s Law, the chips have to shrink while going up in processing power but that of course has its costs associated in production. IBM is looking to employ DNA molecules as a sort of framework for the chip itself while the data is transferred across the chip by use of carbon nanotubes. Basically this all boils down to a few things: one, IBM wants to use nano-tech to reduce the size of processor chips and two, we get more powerful CPUs for our computers that will help with running those intense game sessions some of us tend to fall into. I see this as a win/win situation, a new technology gets put to use and consumers get more powerful computers as the end result.

Well, the time has come to explain my interesting choice in titles. No, my pillow is just fine. I’m just a sucker for a cool idea and implementation of said idea. In this case, a guy built an alarm clock directly into his pillow with a soft LED display and motion control. I watched the video and was surprised to see the dimming feature of the display to prevent it from keeping you awake when you are sleeping. Honestly would kick my clock out my window if I had one of these things.

Tech Tuesday #2: Webcycling The Way To Glory

Ryo here again, title will get explained later and yes I realize I am starting a pattern. Let’s just jump right into the world of tech and take a look-see shall we?

One of my all time favorite sites to browse for the various flavors of gadgets being released is no surprise as being Engadget. Have their RSS feed on my iGoogle home page. Now once in awhile I stumble across something fairly interesting or just downright hilarious. Such as last week’s Palm Pre commercial. Today, from the confines of Engadget’s site I bring you none other than…pancakes. No joke. The delicious breakfast food with nearly limitless options for toppings. Why do I bring you pancakes as the first topic of today? Because someone has made a pancake machine, obviously with restaurants and the like in mind but still the pancake lover with $3,500 to throw around can obtain one. If you want to see a picture of this inherently awesome piece of equipment spitting out one of our beloved breakfast foods, check out the original posting right over here: Chefstack on Engadget.

Let’s see what else I can dig out of my goodies bag…there have been more rumors at the possibility of a new 8 Gig iPhone 3GS surfacing. As of right now, still slated as a rumor and some write it off as a typo though so don’t get your hopes up just yet though I am certain they will eventually release an 8 Gig model or more. Well, unless we all get the 4G network across the board then we may not see it.

Just to pull away from doing anymore of this post about new phone details, which there are a ton of on Engadget for those unaware, I did stumble across something I found really cool and a great example of technology being used to benefit the life of a human being by overcoming a disability. For quite some time, people have relied on hearing aids to help them when their sense of hearing got to a point they couldn’t completely discern the sounds of the world without a little help. While they work fairly well, a new type of hearing aide has been developed that, if it works as planned, will blow everything else away. It is a bone anchored hearing aide that adjusts to the noise of the environment of the person who is using it. They are a tad pricey currently ($12,000 for a pair) but that is to be expected with any new technology. Possibly one of the most random features they could have added into these things? You can hook them into an MP3 player.

Now comes the time for me to wrap things up. This one is a bit off of the ordinary, but I found it humorous and it came with a video to watch. I probably would have passed this over if not for the fact I happened to notice Ubuntu Linux being mentioned in the article associating the video. I am a huge fan of that specific distro as it is currently the operating system I am running right now. These two very geeky guys got together and built a sensor setup to hook into an exercise bike then they wrote some software for the sole reason that they wanted to make it so you need to pedal the bike in order to access the internet while using this laptop on this bike dubbed the Webcycle. Sounds odd, but just look at the presentation and think to yourself: some people could actually use this as an excuse for their daily exercise routine.
