SMC: Popcorn Shrimp

So recently I have discovered an old passion of mine. Something that is very familiar and I have fond childhood memories of. One of the very first things I used to seek out in the mall on every trip by the arcade. Pinball.

My story with pinball starts simple. Fascinating with the blinking lights and quarters to burn. I was hooked the very first time I played, and have always gone back to the game over the years. So my recent purchase of Pinball FX2 for the Arcade makes quite a bit of sense. Four tables to enjoy myself on, others that I will purchase later on down the road (read: not poor).

Playing through the tables, I noticed a trend amongst my friends list on Live. Not many of my friends actually play that game it seems. A shame, because a good game of pinball is easy to squeeze in before work. Peggle as well, but let’s not delve into that today.

I am curious how many of the AMMIH readers have even a slight passion for the game. Better yet, a good story to tell. I’m sure someone has a story better than mine which involves drunken people shouting in my ear while attempting to beat the latest high score. While you ponder on your own history with pinball, here’s a video that should explain a seemingly random choice in titles.

my dad and i always have had a passion for pinball, we even own our own little table. Greatest story of my pinball love is we were in union station (Toronto’s train station) they used to have an arcade with at least 10 different machines. so of course we played, for about 5 hours and missed the last train home. but, we did make it on to every single high score list from 5-1rst on all machines, was a tremendous day. not a huge fan of LOTR, but fuck that pinball machine is so much fucking fun.

Thanks for sharing that story Kyle! What happened after you missed the last train home? Were you stuck there till morning?

Ryokea, I believe I have an XBL Arcade pinball game. Not 100% sure if it’s the one you mentioned.

I’ve always been a fan of pinball machines. My first memory is being at a BBQ, at my uncle’s house in NJ. He had a table top pinball machine which he let me play in the backyard. I played on it the whole freaking day! I wanted one SOOOO bad.

Pinball reminds me of the helpless and hopeless feeling you get when the ball strategically falls between both flippers. And there’s nothing you can do about. I used to to think Full-tilt meant you needed to lift the game off the ground and tilt it a little to keep it from doing just that. Maybe if this game depended upon actual skill it wouldn’t tempt you to cheat. — Pinballs greatest fan

If you know what you are doing, you can save the ball from that situation. Give the machine a little bump to one side and try to nick the ball with a flipper. I’ve saved many by doing that, just don’t bump too hard or you end up putting the machine into tilt.
